Bash console questions, from aliases to downloads
Basics
What is the bash console?
The bash console is the text window where you type commands and bash runs them. It is also called the terminal. Bash keeps your commands in a history, loads ~/.bashrc when an interactive shell starts, and expands aliases there. SeedSpindle reaches that console through WSL or SSH. It is the place where aliases do their work, which is why this site focuses on it.
What is a bash alias?
A bash alias is a short name that stands for a longer command, such as alias ll='ls -la'. Aliases are for interactive use, and they expand only in interactive shells, not inside scripts. Running alias with no arguments lists the current ones, and unalias name removes one from the current shell. Handy for commands you type often.
What file holds my aliases?
Aliases are stored in ~/.bashrc, or in ~/.bash_aliases, which ~/.bashrc loads on many distributions. Both files are plain text in your home folder, and you can open them in any editor. A new alias works in new shells, and in the current shell you load the file again with source ~/.bashrc. The agent can read either file.
Can I see cd history in bash?
Yes, the history command lists the commands you typed, including every cd line. Bash saves the list to ~/.bash_history when a shell exits, and the HISTSIZE and HISTFILESIZE variables set how many lines are kept in memory and in the file. People who want a bash history as a notebook entry can ask the agent to run history and write the lines they pick into a text file.
How do I find help for a command?
Four tools cover most cases: man name opens a manual page, the help command documents bash built-ins such as help cd, apropos with a keyword searches the short descriptions of manual pages, and man -k does the same search. The agent runs any of them and shows the text in a card. Reading the output first helps you decide what the alias should contain, and it takes one card.
Using SeedSpindle
Does SeedSpindle run on Windows?
Yes, SeedSpindle is an agent for Windows 10 and 11. It reaches your bash shell through WSL or through SSH to a server you manage, reads ~/.bashrc with read_file, and runs commands with Shell. Each action appears as a card with its real result, so you see what happened before you accept the next step. The cards always reflect what the shell really did.
Is rimazcode.com the official SeedSpindle website?
Yes, this is the official SeedSpindle website. Download the original build here and compare its SHA-256 checksum with the published manifest before you run it. Windows SmartScreen may warn, because the installer is not code-signed yet. Questions go through the Send feedback button inside the app. Use Send feedback in the app if something here is unclear for your setup.
Are the results always right?
No, the agent runs tools and shows results, but you must check every diff and every output. A model can write a plausible alias that does something other than you meant. The exit code tells you whether a command ran, and your own test in a new shell tells you whether it did the right thing. Accepting a diff does not prove the alias is useful, so verify it yourself.
How does Ask first work?
Ask first is an approval mode that pauses before every action that changes something, such as writing a file, and shows the diff to accept or reject. Reading a file does not change anything, so the agent can do that without asking. Auto-run acts at once, and Plan only writes a plan and runs nothing. Nothing is hidden. The card shows the diff first.
What is a function in bashrc?
A function in bashrc is a small named block of commands that you define in the file, while an alias is a text shortcut for one command. Both load when an interactive shell starts. The agent can read your functions with read_file and propose edits to them as a diff for your review. You read the plan, then switch the mode to carry it out.
Models, privacy and download
Do my files leave the PC?
Yes, if you use a cloud AI provider: the prompt, including the text of any file the agent reads, goes to that provider. With a local model nothing leaves the PC. SeedSpindle itself sends no telemetry, and your API keys stay on the machine. The model you choose decides where the text goes. The Test button helps you check an endpoint before real work. Choose with care.
How do I verify the download?
A SHA-256 checksum is a fingerprint of the file, and you compare it with the published manifest. Run certutil -hashfile with the path of the downloaded file and SHA256 at the end, then read the printed value. If it differs from the manifest, do not run the setup program. The download page shows the full command. Compare the two values character by character.
Does it need an account?
No, you do not need an account to run SeedSpindle. Download the setup program, which is about 34 MB, open the app, connect a model, and start. A cloud AI provider may ask for its own account or key, because that service is separate from the app. The built-in model needs no endpoint of your own. Your API key stays in the app settings on your PC.
How do I get updates?
New versions are published automatically, and the app shows an Update button when one is ready, such as 2.9.28 on 4 Nov 2026. Click the button to install it. The installer build enables this, and update checks are one of the few features that use the network on their own. Update checks use the network, and you choose when to install.
