Alias command in linux, written by a Windows agent

SeedSpindle 2.9.28 is an agent for Windows 10/11 that reads your bash files over WSL or SSH, proposes every alias as a diff, and runs the check in Linux while you review.

Bash aliases

Alias command in linux, step by step

The alias command in linux gives a long command a short name, so alias ll='ls -la' makes ll list files in detail. SeedSpindle 2.9.28 for Windows reads your shell files through WSL or SSH, writes each alias as a diff, and runs the check in the same Linux environment. You accept it. In Ask first mode nothing changes before that.

01

Use bash create alias for ll

Task: give the long listing command a short name. The agent reads ~/.bashrc with read_file, copies it to a backup with copy_file, and then edit_file writes alias ll='ls -la' into ~/.bash_aliases as a diff. Shell runs source on the file and reports the real exit code in the chat card, and you can expand the card to see the full output. It takes 4 tool calls. Start with a copy. In Ask first mode the agent pauses before the edit, so you read the diff, accept it, and only then try ll in a new shell.

Tool trace
read_file ~/.bashrc → loaded
copy_file ~/.bashrc → saved
edit_file ~/.bash_aliases → +1 line
Shell source ~/.bash_aliases → exit 0
02

Set bash history size

Task: keep more commands in your history. The agent runs the history command through Shell to show what you have now, reads the lines in ~/.bashrc that set HISTSIZE and HISTFILESIZE, and proposes new values with edit_file as a diff. HISTSIZE controls how many lines stay in memory and HISTFILESIZE how many are kept in the file. Look closely. Bash writes the list to ~/.bash_history when a shell exits, so the new numbers show up after the next login. Plan only lets you read the whole plan first, and Ask first stops before the write for your approval, 1 diff at a time.

Tool trace
read_file ~/.bashrc → loaded
edit_file ~/.bashrc → +2 lines
Shell echo $HISTSIZE → exit 0
03

Tidy the alias bashrc section

Task: remove aliases you no longer use. An alias bashrc cleanup starts with grep, which lists every line that defines an alias, and with read_file, which shows the surrounding comments so you know why each line exists. The agent then proposes the removal with edit_file, and the diff marks the deleted lines in red. Short and visible. Plan only is a good fit here because the plan names each alias before anything changes, and a backup made with copy_file means you can restore the old file. After you accept, Shell runs source in 1 command and reports the exit code, where a zero exit code means the file loaded.

04

Back up config before an edit

Task: keep a copy of the file before any change. The agent uses copy_file to save ~/.bashrc next to the original, then read_file to confirm the copy opens, and only after that does edit_file propose the real change as a diff. Shell lists the folder with ls so the backup name is visible in the card. Copy first. You decide where the backup lives and what it is called, and you can restore it by asking the agent to copy it back. Ask first pauses at the edit, so the order is copy, read, diff, accept, then test in a new shell, in 5 short steps.

How it differs from a typical chat assistant

SeedSpindle 2.9.28 edits the file itself and shows the real command output, so waving goodbye to a boring prompt is one diff away. You review the diff.

How to get started

  1. Download the 34 MB setup program and run it on Windows 10 or 11.
  2. Open the app, connect a model, and choose the folder you want to work in.
  3. Pick WSL or SSH to a server you manage as the place where bash runs.
  4. Describe the alias you want, read the diff, and accept it only when it looks right.

Who uses it and when

Linux practitioners who maintain their own dotfiles are the first audience. Many wonder how you manage your dotfiles across machines, and the agent helps by copying each file before an edit, reading it, and proposing the change as a diff. You decide.

Beginners meeting alias in linux for the first time get a plain diff instead of a wall of text. Start with ll. When the bashrc code that should show the branch is not working, the agent reads the file and the diff points at the broken line.

Administrators of a few servers they own can reach each one over SSH and review the same kind of diff on each of them. Ask permission first. The app interface comes in 13 languages, so the cards read in your own language.

Frequently asked questions

What is alias command in linux?

An alias is a shortcut for a command in bash. For example, alias ll='ls -la' makes ll run ls -la, and running alias with no arguments lists your current aliases while unalias name removes one. Aliases expand only in interactive shells, not inside scripts. Short names, same command.

Is rimazcode.com the official SeedSpindle website?

Yes, this is the official SeedSpindle website. Check the hash. Download the original build here and compare its SHA-256 checksum with the published manifest before you run it, because the installer is not code-signed yet and Windows SmartScreen may warn. Questions go through the Send feedback button inside the app.

How does the agent read my command history?

The agent runs the history command inside your WSL or SSH session and shows the list in a chat card. Bash history is saved to ~/.bash_history when a shell exits, and HISTSIZE and HISTFILESIZE set how many lines are kept. It can propose new values as a diff. You accept first.

Can I use the agent with WSL?

Yes, WSL and SSH to your own server are both supported. The agent reads ~/.bashrc with read_file, edit_file proposes the change as a diff, and Shell runs the commands in that Linux environment. You stay in the loop. In Ask first mode it pauses before each change, so you read every diff before any file is modified.

Can the agent add an alias for me?

Yes, it writes the alias line into ~/.bashrc or ~/.bash_aliases and shows the diff first. Reload it. A new alias works in new shells, and in the current shell you load the file again with source ~/.bashrc. The agent can run that command and report the exit code in the chat.

Does the agent change system files?

No, the work is meant only for your own account's files such as ~/.bashrc, and you choose the folder and the server. Other users' files and system-wide settings are not part of this job. Stay in your account. The diff shows every line before you accept it, and the agent can keep a copy of the original if you ask.

What if my new alias does not work?

A new alias works in new shells, and aliases expand only in interactive shells, never inside scripts. Check both. If the line is right but the name does nothing, the file may not be loaded yet, so run source ~/.bashrc. The agent reports the exit code and shows the result in the card.
